All Westover Field Microscopes are hand-held inspection tools that will provide years of service, true optical performance, and laser safety. Their design incorporates an LED that provides 100,000 hrs. of lamp life and extends battery life.

The L-Series features oblique illumination, which provides an excellent view of end-face cleanliness and core condition. Optical microscopes with oblique illumination are strongly preferred by maintenance technicians and installers who are not highly specialized in fiber. The fact that scratches are not as clearly visible (as when seen through coaxial illumination microscopes) is viewed as an advantage by many because it prevents overpolishing and saves time.

In general our “400x” models are used after polishing to inspect for fine defects incurred during the polishing or cleaning process. When depressed, our ScratchView button implements a specialized contrast enhancement algorithm over the surface of the glass fiber. This filter makes fine defects readily detectable and dramatically reduces the need for extensive training of technicians. Using this feature can help cut down on disputes between vendors and customers as both sides will see every defect.

It should be noted that we have taken liberty with the magnification values stated with these models. Actual magnification is dependent on monitor size and can be determined using the technical bulletin linked below.

The FVW series is our modular system, where the video microscope is separate from the monitor. This allows the user to place the monitor on a shelf while the scope is on the bench. It also helps us keep the cost of the system down, and enables the user to choose their own monitor if they prefer. The FV- prefix items include the microscope, power supply, video cable, and universal 2.5mm adapter. The FVW- prefix items include all of the FV- contents in addition to a monitor of specified size.

The FVDW series are our dual integrated workstations. These units feature a microscope base attached below the monitor. This integration saves space on the table and eliminates cumbersome cables. In the base, we incorporate two patch cord microscopes with an A/B switch to select which image is displayed on the monitor. These units are popular for a number of reasons. Some users prefer dual workstations because it allows them to insert one type of adapter on the left side and a different one on the right side (ie: Universal 1.25 vs. Universal 2.5, MTP vs. SC, etc.). This reduces the time to inspect as you do not have to change adapters frequently.

Other users prefer dual workstations because they can choose a 200x system on the left and a 400x system on the right. This allows for precision inspection of the glass followed by a wide-field inspection of the contact zone for contamination.

The FVCW series are our combination workstations. These units feature a microscope base integrated below the monitor. The base includes an FV style patch cord microscope, an input for a probe scope, an A/B switch to change between the two scopes, and a holder into which the probe can be stored. In assembly environments there is quite often the need to first inspect the patch cord, then inspect a connector that is already installed within a mating adapter. This system is the classic male/female inspection solution for factory environments and has been chosen widely since its inception. Some models are sold with a probe, while others do not include a probe so you can purchase separately.

The FBP3 series is purpose-built for reaching between adjacent cards/modules to reach optical connectors in the backplane. Westover's patented ribbon drive is integrated into many configurations and provides the industry's only practical solution for backplane ribbon inspection. We also offer simplex tips when applicable.

While we offer a large assortment of backplane interface tips, we find ourselves frequently designing custom tips for given applications. This is a service we offer and welcome all inquiries.

FBP3-P3L

The FBP3-P3L is a long-reach backplane probe that is designed to inspect connectors that are otherwise difficult to access. It can fit down a channel less than 1" wide and accommodates all standard "FBPT" series inspection tips. It does not include the Ribbon Drive feature. The 4-pin output interfaces with the FBP-HD1 handheld display, "FBP-VO" series video output module, or FBPP-USB3 USB 1.1 module. A converter cable (not included) allows you to connect the FBP3-P3L to a FBP-HD2 display.
FBP3-P3LP

The FBP3-P3LP is a long-reach backplane probe that is designed to inspect connectors that are otherwise difficult to access. It can fit down a channel less than 1" wide and accommodates all standard "FBPT" series inspection tips. It does not include the Ribbon Drive feature. This unit features a PAL camera, and the 4-pin output interfaces with any "FBP-VO" series video output module with a -EU or -UK designation, or FBPP-USB3 USB 1.1 module.
FBP3-P3RL

The FBP3-P3RL is a long-reach backplane probe that is designed to inspect ribbon connectors that are otherwise difficult to access. It can fit down a channel less than 1" wide and accommodates all "FBP3" series inspection tips.

This model uses our patented RibbonDrive technology, which allows stable and repeatable inspection of all fibers on the ribbon ferrule endface.

The 4-pin output interfaces with the FBP-HD1 handheld display, "FBP-VO" series video output module, or FBPP-USB3 USB 1.1 module. A converter cable (not included) allows you to connect the FBP3-P3RL to a FBP-HD2 display.

Westover continues to lead the industry by providing ruggedized drop-tested Liquid Crystal Displays for hand held field use. We offer two primary solutions and several options within these categories.

  HD1 product line offers the highest level of performance and proven success. Features include:

• 3.5” TFT LCD with front-mounted contrast adjustment
• Removable Sony® lithium ion battery with 3 hours continuous run time (extended using auto-shutoff feature)
• Built-in power management system
• Adjustable auto-shutoff feature to preserve battery life. Settings for 10 seconds, 30 seconds, and infinite run
• Fuel gauge showing remaining battery life
• Built-in charge feature so you can use while you charge
• Built-in hanging accessory for hands free operation
• Ergonomic design

The HD2 product line was developed as an economical alternative to the HD1. It is available in several configurations, and in some ways offers more versatility than the HD1

• 3.5” TFT LCD with contrast adjustment wheel at the bottom of the display
• Removable 8 AA battery pack providing 6 hours run time using recommended Alkaline or NiMH rechargeable batteries. NiMH batteries must be removed to be recharged.
• Integrated Grip-Switch feature turns unit on when you hold it in your hand. The GripSwitch can be disabled for traditional on/off functionality, but this feature can dramatically extend battery life for hand held use.
• Built-in table stand
• Optional modules for patch cord viewing and/or integrated visual fault locator (explained below)

For the HD2 line, the optional modules are designed to deliver more utility at highly competitive prices. The integrated patch cord module has two major advantages. First, it allows the user to install a patch cord adapter (for male connectors) on the display and a bulkhead tip for an external probe on a single system. This allows the user to inspect both the male and female connectors without having to change tips. This saves considerable time and cuts down on lost tips and adapters.

For users who are currently inspecting male patch cords with hand held optical scopes, the patch cord module dramatically changes the ergonomics of the application. Whether the scope is all-optical or a non-direct view, these devices require the user to insert the patch cord and then hold the scope to their eye. This is nearly impossible when the patch cord is restrained by cable management and located either very high or low in a rack or distribution frame. Using the HD2 display with its patch cord module allows the user to bring the microscope to the patch cord and then view the image from a comfortable distance.

The HD2 is also available with an integrated visual fault locator (VFL). VFL’s are essential tools for troubleshooting newly spliced or terminated assemblies and for helping check dead-zones within OTDR traces. They are used widely throughout the industry and often command over US$350 as stand alone devices. As an upgrade to an HD2, the increase in cost is less than US$175! Further, as both probe scopes and VFL’s are common tools in troubleshooting, why not get them in one package with one set of batteries and at a lower cost?

All of Westover’s probes (excluding the FBP-P5000) can be interfaced to a PC using a USB module. These modules include image compression chip sets and port to a USB 1.1 port or higher. That makes them ideal for use with older computers.

Further, as they interface to a standard probe, buying this module allows the user to switch between use with a PC and use with a hand held display (as opposed to an FBP-P5000 probe which is digital-only and requires a PC). This is particularly valuable for users who are not sure they will always have access to a PC. Frequently, we’re told users sometimes have a laptop, but when they don’t, they still want a means for viewing an image. In those applications, we recommend they buy both a USB 1.1 module and a hand held display for maximum versatility.

Further, if the user has an older PC (less than a P4 with 1 gig RAM), the USB 1.1 module likely required because the PC will not be able to handle the requirements of the FBP-P5000 probe. For users who know they will always be using the probe with a relatively modern PC, we strongly recommend they choose the FBP-P5000 over a USB 1.1 module.

USB modules are available with either 4-pin or 6-pin inputs. Users should choose a model that matches the probe they have selected. If you haven’t purchased the probe yet and are planning on using the probe with a PC (at least sometimes) we recommend you choose a 6-pin probe and a 6-pin USB 1.1 module. Doing so will give you the Quick Capture button mounted on the probe. This function will provide huge benefits in actual use.
